NAAFA has come out against the latest policy change from United Airlines. Their press release states that, "NAAFA believes United's policy change will add yet another way to discriminate against already marginalized fat people and be counter productive to United's and the airline industry's economic future". Indeed with the current economic climate, airlines will want to put as many people as possible on flights to increase profitability. For Immediate Release April 17, 2009 Oakland, CA - NAAFA, a civil rights organization working to end discrimination against people of size strongly urges United Airlines to reconsider their new discriminatory policy of charging passengers of size for two seats. United Airlines has stated that they have implemented this policy as a result of receiving 700 complaints last year, which is equal to 1/1000th of 1% of the passengers traveling on their airline. (63,000,000 passengers traveled United in the same period). United Airlines new policy forces larger passengers who do not fit in to a single seat to purchase another seat if there is not a free one next to them. They will go as far as upgrades to business class or getting bumping to another flight. This goes in to force as of Wednesday. Most diets recommend drinking water, however Jacqueline Henson from Huddersfield drank 4 litres within 2 hours and on the 14th of November last year she died. The inquest in to her death has revealed that while watching TV, she consumed two bottles containing two litres of water each. Later on she complained that her stomach was 'solid'. The obese in the UK may be paid to walk their children school, if new proposals go ahead. The Government is looking to invest $50 million to 'encourage' walking to school to help combat obesity.
